Credentials and Professional Experience:
Kristin Coggin is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Georgia. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Columbus State University in Columbus, Ga and a Master’s Degree in Community Counseling from The University of Georgia in Athens, Ga. Kristin is also a Registered Play Therapist and frequently utilizes Animal Assisted Therapy techniques in her sessions.
Kristin has experience working with adults, adolescents and children in both individual and group settings. She also has experience in family counseling and crisis intervention. Her experiences include working in community mental health, residential treatment settings and private agencies. Her experiences include working with clients of all ages in areas including mood disorders, anxiety disorders, anger management, relationship issues, and ADHD.
Kristin uses a variety of counseling theories and approaches to help each client achieve their individual goals and fulfill their needs. She sees counseling as a process of fostering hope and support in order to enhance intrinsic motivation for change. She focuses on meeting each client where they are in their lives and facilitating their individual journey towards growth. By utilizing the skills and techniques in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) Kristin focuses on the relationship between thoughts and emotions and changing thought processes in order to change emotions. Through therapy, people can discover unhealthy thought patterns and beliefs and work toward replacing them with healthier alternatives. Further exploring, and perhaps changing, these unhealthy thoughts and beliefs can achieve progress and change. Kristin views therapy as a collaborative process in which client and therapist are working together towards a common goal.
As a Registered Play Therapist, Kristin most frequently utilizes Child Centered Play Therapy as well as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in her work with children ages 3-12. Play is a child’s language. By using toys, sand trays and other creative expressive techniques children are able to express themselves, problem solve, experiment and gain self-confidence and mastery in day to day activities.
Uniquely, Kristin also uses Canine Assisted Play Therapy (CAPT) in her work. Along with Tripp, her Therapy Dog, Kristin teaches children social skills, appropriate empathetic responses, responsibility for self and stress reduction skills. The unconditional love and acceptance Tripp brings to the play room improves the therapeutic relationship and assists in fostering desired changes.
