Addictions and Mental Health Counselor

Credentials and Professional Experience:

Lane Gormley is a Counselor and Psychotherapist with MS and EdS degrees in Professional Counseling. She is licensed in the State of Georgia as a Professional Counselor. She is also a National Certified Counselor and a member of the Licensed Professional Counselors Association of Georgia. Lane is also certified by the National Board for Certified Counselors as a Distance Counselor and practices online, using a HIPPA-compliant platform, and by telephone when necessary. She is an NCE Board-Certified Coach, and she is certified by the National Guild of Hypnotists as a Hypnotherapist. Lane initially received a Ph.D. in literature with an emphasis on the psychoanalysis of literary texts. It was this degree that led, later, to her Clinical Practice.

Lane completed her Master’s Internship at the Northside Hospital Recovery Center where she worked with patients recovering from alcohol and drug addictions. Her 300-hour EdS internship was at Ridgeview Institute in Adult Psychiatric and Addiction Services.

She has worked as a Clinical Therapist at Emory University on The Heart Failure Study which, co-sponsored by the American Heart Association, examined the effect of 12 sessions of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) on depression in patients who had experienced heart failure. Lane has also worked in the inpatient Behavioral Health Services crisis unit at Dekalb Medical Center and in two private practice settings.

Approach:

Lane is an Adlerian psychotherapist who works with individuals, couples (including LGBTQ), families, and groups to achieve a conscious understanding of process. She uses techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Cognitive Behavior Modification (CBM), traditional Psychoanalysis, Imago therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and Solution Focused Brief Therapy to help her clients change what they want to change about their lives and relationships. Although fluent in several methodologies, she tries to enlist as many of her clients’ individual strengths as possible in order to facilitate their healing process. It is her belief that no person is like any other person, so one person’s issues and feelings cannot be treated in exactly the same way as someone else’s. She also believes that much of what happens in couples and families begins with a breakdown in communication; and so initial sessions may be devoted to re-establishing that vital connection.

Areas of Expertise:

Lane’s areas of specialization include life changes, relationships, addiction, dual diagnosis, depression and mood disorders, stress management, crisis, and trauma. She writes about her group practice in “Through the Looking Glass: The Facilitation of Mirroring in Group Process” which appeared in the September, 2008 issue of The Journal for Specialists in Group Work. This article examines the power of group process in treating addictions and other mental health diagnoses. In “They Can Do It, and You Can Help: Teaching Children about Personal Process” she outlines what parents need to know about process in order to help their children. This article was featured in the November/December, 2011 issue of The Mother Magazine which, published in the United Kingdom, is read in over 40 countries worldwide.

Lane often blogs for Ray of Hope.
