Valerie Miranda is a LPC in the state of Georgia. Valerie graduated with a Master of Education in Community Mental Health from Georgia Southern University in 2010. She received her Bachelor of Science in Education in Exercise and Sport Science from the University of Georgia in 2006. Valerie has extensive experience with children, adolescents, and family systems. She has worked in hospital settings including long-term residential and acute inpatient treatment. As well, she has worked in in-home settings, private school, and private practice settings.
As a counselor, Valerie believes that change happens when both behaviors decrease and negative thought patterns decline. Although, behavior changes may occur quickly when faced with a negative consequence the result is not always permanent change. Valerie utilizes a variety of therapeutic techniques and approaches to help generate permanent change including: Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy/CBT, play therapy, brief-solution focused therapy, and narrative therapy to help people of all ages gain insight into themselves and ignite change.
Children naturally learn and grow through play. She utilizes play therapy with children from ages 5 to about 10 years old. Play therapy can be used as a way for children to express their emotions when they have difficulty finding the words to express them. Play therapy helps build rapport, express emotions, and facilitate change within the child as they resolve their emotional distress through play.
